Whitebark Pine - Defiance

Add to Cart
This abstract photo is intended to show the defiant nature of whitebark pine, which can resist brutal winter storms at high altitude, but is declining due to beetle kill, disease, and fire suppression. I struggled with the decision to frame the shot with Mt. Hood centered in the background, but decided that doing so added a bit of whimsy and it evokes a sense of victory to the tree – like a trophy for fighting so hard.
I used a polarizing filter which made the sky (already clear and dark blue at this altitude) and surrounding shaded foliage appear even darker against the sunlit bleached branches of the tree. The color distracted from my intent for the photo so I converted to black and white and then further darkened the sky and surrounding foliage to remove distractions and showcase the tree.
I especially like that Barrett Spur, a favorite hiking destination, is visible at the far left.
